Puppy Lessons
For the past two weeks, I’ve been a puppy mom and all that goes with that. It’s like having a toddler in the house. Twelve and a half years have passed since I’ve had a puppy, and I forget just how time consuming it can be. But it’s such a special time as well.
Percy is teaching me more than I am him right now. (Not for lack of trying.)
He’s teaching me ahhh patience for one, but not just patience, he’s teaching me, or maybe reminding me is a better word, that life is lived moment to moment. There are no long-term agendas or plans for puppies. Just second by second decisions of what can I get into now.
I love watching him explore his new world. A tall weed among the grass is something to be conquered. A tiny crevice is somewhere to fit. Deer poop is well you know…
But seriously, we can learn from this baby doggie fascination with everything. And not just sights, but with sounds and smells too. To pay attention to the moment we’re in is to fully live that moment. And since our lives are made up of only one moment after the other, does this mean this is how to fully live? Something to ponder.
Do dogs live more in their short lives than we do? We are often in our heads, either in the past or the future. But really neither of these exist - only now exists. Think about it. The past is gone and the future isn’t here, so when we go there, where are we really?
So Percy’s lesson to me, that I’m now sharing with you, is to live like a dog.
Sniff out what you want out of this life and then moment by moment, live into that.
Sleep when you feel like it.
And always, always love unconditionally along the way.
Oh, but stay away from the poop. Just a suggestion.
Sending my best,
Connie
